Is 6 ply double knitting?
6 ply sock yarns are more of a double knit (DK) weight than your typical sock yarns which tend to be like a 4 ply. 6 ply sock yarns knit up faster and give a bulkier, warmer sock.
What is single ply yarn good for?
Single ply offers a lighter, fluffy feeling to your knits (while still offering warmth) but it means less stitch definition. Single ply yarn looks its best with plain stockinette stitch but can still looks good with uncomplicated cables patterns. But please, never use single ply for socks.
